Generating higher education opportunities for selected students from Projecto Oceano, AZLera’s flagship education programme on Ilha de Moçambique
Education is seen as one of the biggest priorities across all developmental / poverty reduction scales. Focused, high quality education is in great need in sub-Saharan Africa in order to create a generation of students and leaders thatcan address and transform the key issues facing their countries.
In 2012, AZLera began a University Scholarship Initiative to enable AZLera’s top students to attend Mozambique’s best universities to study a range of focused courses including Medicine, Architecture, Business, and Engineering. Finding suitable further education opportunities for the project’s most capable students is the natural progression of AZLera’s work. In order to fulfil the potential that Projecto Oceano has developed, our top students need to receive the best education possible. It is our vision to create leaders that will contribute positively to the development of Mozambique, which is highlighted by our selection of socially minded individuals as members of the project, who demonstrate their motivation and dedication as volunteer teachers.
The first two beneficiaries of AZLera’s University Scholarship Fund began their respective courses in Architecture and Medicine in February 2013. AZLera repeated the process in 2013 and awarded the Scholarship Fund to Naiza Langa - a thoroughly deserving candidate who has excelled at the project for the last 5 years or so. AZLera will continue to send further students to university through 2014 and beyond.
AZLera is looking to raise a minimum of £20,000 in 2014 to fund the tuition fees for our current and future Scholarship students from its education programme on the Ilha de Moçambique – Projecto Oceano. The successful students will have to pass a rigorous application and assessment phase to ensure that they are equipped to handle the demands of further education, studying at Mozambique’s most respected universities.
AZLera Scholarship Fund is looking to achieve the following:
• Natural progression: Since 2002, AZLera’s Projecto Oceano has been working with the most talented and ambitious students from the local community on Ilha de Moçambique. Helping these students achieve entry into tertiary education is the natural progression of our work.
• Degree focus: AZLera’s scholarships focus on subjects that will be most useful to individual students, to their families and to Mozambique. Without support, our students will not be able to attend university due to high tuition and school fees.
• Carpe diem: Northern Mozambique will undergo major economic development over the next 20 years. Public, private and foreign companies need highly-qualified young Mozambicans in fields including Agriculture, Medicine and Engineering.
• Unlock potential: AZLera’s scholarships will prepare our best students for the competitive nature of Mozambique’s job market. For Mozambique to benefit from oil / infrastructure / agricultural / general economic growth, locals must be involved at technical levels. Our scholarships promote this.
